It’s about a killer who has kidnapped a woman (called Amanda I think) and has left her to starve to death in his garage whilst he goes away, but a car crashes into the garage and she is found. The police investigate the house and find barrels in the cellar with multiple women’s bodies inside.
The killer has help from an anonymous guy over the internet who refers to him as the monster. This guy tips him off that the police are searching for him and he goes on the run. It turns out that this guy witnessed the killer murder a girl (called Jennifer) and instead of turning him in he asks the killer for protection.
The main police officer also gets too involved in the case because his ex-girlfriend (Anna) disappeared years ago and he thinks she could be one of the women in the barrels.
There is one specific scene that I can recall – they track the killer to a town and start searching for him there. An undercover police officer drives by an abandoned house in a rural area and sees that there is a light on in the house even though it is supposedly abandoned. The killer is hiding in the grass and says that he will kill the man if he gets out of the car, but the man drives away as he felt like he was being watched.
I remember the book so clearly but I have no idea what the name of it is.
