I just finished my first (and last) D.H. Lawrence novel. My main impression is that Lawrence says so much in this book without saying anything at all. You know how sometimes you read a book and the situations are written with just the right words to make you resonate and relate? Well, this book had a few of those moments but mostly it is the opposite.

For instance, upon news that his friend Gerald’s 14-year-old-sister has most likely drowned that night, Birkin has this to say:

“What does it matter if Diana Crich is alive or dead?”

“Doesn’t it?” she (Ursula) said, shocked.

“No, why should it? Better she were dead – she’ll be much more real. She’ll be positive in death. In life she was a fretting, negated thing.”

He and Ursula then dive into a
philosophical discussion that made me want to throw the book against the wall.

Of course D.H. Lawrence based Birkin upon himself, which makes me inclined to believe Lawrence was probably insufferable.

Anyone else read D.H. Lawrence and what were your thoughts?
