Started reading for joy as a hobby a little under a year ago, and realized I’ve only really read one genre of fiction, fantasy. I want to explore other genres to see if something else may fit my taste a bit more (though I do absolutely love fantasy, shout out Neil Gaiman).

What are some quick, easy, and good reads across the sub-genres of fiction for a newer reader to go through to feel out other genres?

I recommend dystopian type books, it’s like fantasy. Some books in the genre I recommend are The Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, and Divergent. When I was new to reading these books really made me get into reading. But, they are typically 300-500 pages long and have several books in the series. Hopefully this helps!

I also have to force myself out of the fantasy genre! Here’s a couple I’ve found that I loved…

Historical fiction: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (a bit longer, but reads easily)
Science Fiction: Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
Contemporary: A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Classic: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Memoir: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

I’m still looking for a favorite mystery/horror, so if anyone has good suggestions pls add them!

    3. I used to hate “normal protagonist just does normal life things” novels (there has to be a better way to explain that), but a complicated kindness by Miriam toews somehow became my favourite book, so maybe it’ll convince you too?

But my serious suggestion would be to go to a library! Mine always had a new arrivals section and a recommended by librarians section, which had tons of variety, and aren’t separated by genre at all.
