I’m 25F and want to recommend books for my mom, 56F. We have a good relationship. She’s not super political (right now I’d describe her as a centrist; she is pro-immigration, religious, fiscally conservative, pro-Black Lives Matter and pro-LGBTQ, pro-Palestine, and consistently votes third party because “both sides are bad”). She is generally pretty open minded when faced with the “human” side of something (like she became vocally pro Palestine after going on a pilgrimage in 2018 and seeing how Palestinians were treated).
Right now, I recommended Bullshit Jobs, and she’s pretty eager to read it. I didn’t describe all the stuff with UBI in it but I’m hoping she’ll like it and it seemed to pique her interest. Because she’s religious, she’s a little more skeptical of abortion rights (she thinks recent abortion bans in states like Mississippi are overkill but she thinks abortion is sort of a “necessary evil,” that women get abortion as birth control, and has said it should be legal on a “wink wink, nod nod” basis). In particular, I’m interested in recommending her books on:
a) maternal healthcare in America, specifically as it relates to abortion rights and maternal mortality
b) the experience of what it’s like to be a trans woman (my mom is supportive bc we have trans friends but is still learning)
c) universal basic income and labor rights
She is drawn to books with human narratives that center around people’s experiences.
Thank you in advance:-)
