I just read The Strange Library of Haruki Murakami and I really liked it. Feels like a kids book but it’s not a kids book. It’s very dream like, little dark. And the stuff happening is mostly illogical. Something like magical but dark. And short, with illustrations.
I think I put up a lot of filters but it will do even if it’s only somewhat close to the above description. Thanks!

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. Explores a man’s reminiscence of his childhood involving ancient powers and supernatural events. Not illustrated tho.
The Gashlycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey. Darkly funny and macabre alphabet book tells the story of 26 children.

Momo by Michael Ende
I just finished “White Cat Black Dog” which is 7 short stories that are modern fairy tales and very, very good. Has lovely illustrations to start each story.
Also “Owlish” is totally trippy and good.
And “Lincoln in the Bardo” is amazing fantasy/historical, but you have to tolerate “alternative” fiction, as a lot of it is told through things like news clippings and short quotes.
