I recently read the You series by Caroline Kepnes. I wasn’t expecting such deviations from the show. I’ve never came across a narrator like Joe, he is truly insane. With a lot of books, especially those in extreme horror (so I’ve heard), shock value seemed so forced. Like the author is trying so hard to come up with the next most disturbing thing a reader can read. Something like gore loses its point after a few pages. I’ve never read gore but I can’t imagine me wanting to read 400 pages of torture. But with Joe it’s like a train wreck you can’t look away from. It’s not him, the character, or Kepnes, the author, trying to be edgy. He’s just genuinely that crazy. And no gore was used to show that!
Another book I read recently was Tampa by Alissa Nutting. Also an insane narrator. But to me it just lacked the authenticity of Joe.
Please recommend more insane narrators. I want something that could actually shock me! I have American Psycho in my tbr, I’m sure that won’t disappoint either.
