I don’t know how to word this really, but I’m just starting back up on my reading again. I’ve been reading some sapphic books but they were a little cheesy with the romance.

I’m looking for something that I can’t put down, can’t stop thinking about, something that will change my life or make me think differently. I want raw emotion and thought provoking writing. Something where I have to stop mid chapter and stare at the ceiling. It could be really any genre. I like romance, horror, historical fiction, sapphic, science fiction, fiction, fantasy, humor, mystery and crime. Pretty much anything really, I just want to be hooked and tossed around in my head. Appreciate it!

    1. If you’re willing to tolerate a bit of male gaze, I suggest Berlin Noir by Philip Kerr, which is a trilogy of mystery books in one volume set in Pre and Post WW2 Germany.

There’s many passages dedicated to the horrors of Nazism and the normalization of cruelty against everyday people, as well as the protagonist struggling to hold on to his humanity while trapped in such an enviroment.

I’m sure it’s not the type of writing that you’re looking for but it’s an interesting premise and emotionally it reels you in and you get so deeply attached. I told people don’t read it on the subway. My coworker came into work looking a mess and was like I should have listened. I chose it for book club and someone finished it in the car and came in still crying.

    3. Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield could be an option. I definitely couldn’t stop thinking about it while reading it and had to just sit there is silence for a while once I finished it. Found it much more captivating than expected. To paraphrase the back cover: a marine biologist comes back from a submarine expedition that lasted months longer than it was supposed to and now she’s acting strangely and her wife can’t figure out what is going on. Some raw emotions are had.

I was totally into The Stars Don’t Lie by Boo Walker

But my top 3 favorite books are by Kent Nerburn and they are a trilogy and true stories. Have tissue ready.

      Neither Wolf Nor Dog

      The Wolf at Twilight

The Girl Who Sang with the Buffalo

The three books will take you into the world of the Lakota Natives. The audio books are like listening to an Elder teach.

If you’re looking for a book that’s sapphic and has no shortage of raw emotion, try An Education in Malice and A Dowry of Blood, both by ST Gibson. Her writing style is so beautiful and visceral
