Hey everyone! So i’ve read the first five books in the first law and as a gift for my birthday i got all quiet on the western front and sun tzu the art of war. This was unexpected as i wanted to continue the first law, but, as the books are small, i will give them a try. Are they any good?

    1. Well, something being “good” is entirely subjective to the readers taste. So, while some here may tell you something is good or bad, you may have the complete opposite opinion. So, keep that in mind I guess. Haha.

As for your books, All Quiet On The Western Front is an absolute classic and a beautifully done World War 1 novel. As someone who is a history teacher I absolutely love the feelings it instills and the time period placement. However, my students (year 10-12) tend to not be as impressed unless they have that specific interest. Haha.

Art of War is not a novel in the traditional sense. Like it’s not a fictional story (it’s non fiction) starting at point A and ending at Z. It’s a Chinese Military Treatise by Sun Tzu in 13 chapters from around 770 to 481 BCE. Each chapter talks about the art of military tactics and warfare. A lot of people find inspiration in this book outside of military interest though and more the philosophy around it. Such as I know many sports players or coaches who love to apply the ideas (loosely) to their gameplay strategies.

So there you go. Hope that helps!

    2. The Art of War is literally a military training manual from ancient China – so it includes considerations for the use of chariots, the advantages of archers, different tactics depending on the type of terrain you’re fighting on etc. It is VERY specific to warfare of the period.

The one part I liked was the part where he talks about espionage and intelligence. But as others as noted, it’s not a book that you would pick up and read cover to cover necessarily.
