I’m thinking Him by Geoff Ryan (in which Jesus is born a woman, as a biological clone of Mary but grows into manhood, akin to being transgender) and Dayspring by Anthony Oliveira (told in prose and poetry, chronicling the love between a sexual, young, anarchist Jesus and his historically documented “beloved disciple”)
I think it takes such talent to take primary sources and turn them into compelling fiction, which is why historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. I want to praise Oliveira and Ryan’s work specifically because they are doing something weird and wonderful in their craft. Im agnostic myself and I’d recommend their books to anyone on the spectrum of faith. Amazing, amazing reads!
