Book about visual art movements through history (before XXI century).

I'm looking for a detailed book (single or series) that would cover major visual art movements (preferably in Europe/America regions), that were dominating professional and academic art fields up to XXI century. Preferably painting, but any visual art is fine.

I'm mostly interested in:

-why particular movement were created (historical background);
-how it was achieved (some explanation how to identify it, what was most differentiating about that style);
-what it left for future art movements that were created after it (historical implications/consequences).
