Recently read True Grit by Portis and loved it. One part that I was a little confused on however was the part where Ned leaves Chaney and Mattie together.
Does he expect Chaney to actually do what he has been told what to do and leave Mattie unharmed? Does he not care? Does he actually expect Chaney to be able to find a horse or is this just his way of getting rid of both of them and Chaney was too dumb to notice?
