I enjoyed the world described in the first book (Revenger) so I decided to continue with the second book (Shadow Captain) but there were a couple of story points that stood out as odd/forced to me, and I was hoping someone here would be willing to discuss these points and whether or not things like this appear in the third book.
When they shot at the ship following them, why didn't they use grape shot? why did they choose to use hull penetrating shot? This type of shot was a poor choice for their purpose. Unless the other ship were pinging them, they'd never now how close those shots went past their hull. While, if they'd have used grape shot, they'd have damaged their sails to the point where continued pursuit would be physically impossible. The fact that this choice had significant consequences throughout the remainder of the book made me feel like this whole story was forced by the author.
When they got to the main stash of the loot, why did they reel up more than one cart? Why not just reel up one cart and inspect it? What was the hurry? This also felt forced and artificial.
For anyone who has read these books, am I being too critical? Did those two events stand out to you?
There were a few other bits that stood out for me as odd, but those to felt the least natural.
For anyone who has read book three (Bone Silence), is there a satisfying conclusion to the series? Without spoilers please. If I'm a little irked at the book/story at this point, but I suspend disbelieve a bit longer, will the third book be a solid read or am I likely to encounter other nonsense plot points?
Thank you for any discussion on this topic or the world described in these books.
