Hey!! This guy I am dating is coming up on his 33rd birthday (yayyy) but he likes a completely different genre of books than I do AND he’s read just about everything under the sun.

I’m looking for some out of the box suggestions in the fantasy category. Books that if I googled “Fantasy Books” it wouldn’t be one of the first to come up. He loved the Wheel of Time series, Game of Thrones, stuff like that. Literally any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks so much in advance.

    1. Riddlemaster (McKillip) or Lord of Light (Zelazny). Technically the 2nd is sci-fi but it feels very fantasy.

    2. Dandelion Dynasty is a bit niche but he might have gone there. It’s excellent magic-less fantasy and some of the best writing out there. Put the odds of a fantasy fan not having read it at like 75%.

The one I’m 99.9% sure he’s not read is A Winter’s Promise from Christelle Dabos. Oniric and original, slightly YA vibe but nothing too teenage cringe.

the name of the wind by Patrick rothfuss is amazing, but he may have already read those. maybe you could try Michael Crichton “Timeline,” its not part of a series but has similar elements to the others you mentioned

I can wholeheartedly recommend anything from Brent weeks. (Shadow trilogy or Lightbringer )
(Though idk if he already read these one’s)

Something that really isn’t well known are the ‘battle mage books by peter A. Flannery’.

And lastly something on the uprise of Fantasy books is ‘the rage of dragons series by Evan winter’

      Hope these suggestions help ^^

    5. There is Luminocity – Grieving Gold from Daniel McDaniel.
The author describes it as Aztec mythology inspired Game of Thrones, with multiple POV-s and a plot around war, politics, street gangs, and cosmic horrors.
It is not out yet, but you can download the first 80 pages or so from the author’s website.
