As a relatively new reader I often find the process of starting a new book sucks. Having to learn the names of new characters and feeling like I’m “out of the know” is a little intimidating… So that leaves me to my question, how long does it usually take for one to become familiar with the flow of a new book? To the point where you understand people, places, themes etc. Is it a mere 20 minutes? A few hour reading session? Or several days?

depends on the book. i expect the plot to start moving around 20%, so i should be familiar with all the actors by then. of course that doesn’t mean new characters won’t be introduced later in the book.

themes sometimes take the whole book. you won’t know what the author is trying to tell you until they finish telling it to you.
