While I make big efforts every year to diversify my reading, I always find myself going back to mystery and thriller books – there’s something about the whodunit that has endless appeal to me.
I’ve noticed in a lot of mystery/thriller novels I read that despite the main character usually going through a life changing event, betray their loved ones – or maybe even having to break the law themselves, they always end up “fine” – forgiven by their loved ones, seemingly fine despite very obvious trauma, and held unaccountable by law enforcement for often multiple crimes committed throughout the book.
Am I being too critical of a genre and should expect a stretch of the imagination (you often have to when reading these types of stories, particularly during a villainous monologue and/or showdown), or should there be a more realistic conclusion to these types of characters? Let me know your thoughts, because it’s driving me crazy.
