Fiction only, please.
There are lots and lots of books (and tv shows, movies, etc) about characters fighting terrible illness and ultimately prevailing, against all odds. There are also plenty of stories about characters initially resisting treatment for probably-fatal disease, but then being convinced by family and friends "to fight."
I'm looking for books where the main character decides to reject the "warrior" archetype; instead they choose to accept progressive or terminal illness and spend their remaining time pursuing quality of life rather than more treatments.
One example of the type of story I'm looking for is Five Feet Apart, about two people with cystic fibrosis. It's not the perfect example (and it's a film), but the characters do "break the rules" that keep them alive, so it kind of fits. I'm looking for books, but if you have fictional stories in other formats to recommend, those would also be welcome.
Thanks very much!
