(there may be a different term in common use I don't know about, this isn't my usual genre)
I'm feeling a bit down lately and wanted to read a nice romance novel.
But I don't really care for most romance stories, because they almost always have a will they/won't they about a problem internal to the relationship. She's only in town for vacation, they're on rival curling teams, he's violent and barely hinged, etc. I just don't usually find internal conflict can keep my interest for a full novel.
Compare with the films of Makoto Shinkai, where the problem is external to the relationship. We live on opposite sides of Japan and are only brought together by magic for unknown purposes, he's been turned into a chair by malicious sentient key, she's been drafted in a space war while he's stuck on earth.
