Could you suggest me a book where the main character could have self-destructed or done something bad, but instead decided to do the right thing or improve?
I feel like that is a very very common plot trope. Stormlight Archives immediately comes to mind if you’re into fantasy books. It follows a small handful of people and each of them are forced with these sorts of decisions at one time or another. One, in particular, more than the others due to having a paradigm shifting experience that changed him from a war monger to being perhaps the biggest champion for peace and solidarity.
Also, the arcane ascension universe has a few different sections to it. 2/3 of those series follow a protagonist that’s main conflict is an internal one that’s dealing with destructive tendencies. Probably not a series to skip around in though so look up the reading order if you’re interested in that one. It can get a little whacky if you try to do the series by themselves since the publication order jumps between them.
Lastly, I just finished Project Hail Mary. The build up takes a while to get there but when it does it’s absolutely glorious. Pretty heavy on science at times but the author does a good job of also dumbing it down for the readers.

Say one thing for Logen Nine-Fingers, say he’s trying to be a better man.
