Literary Fiction to recommend to a family member?

I am trying to recommend literary fiction to a family member and could use some suggestions. Nothing overly inappropriate (ex. Gravity's Rainbow) or aggressively dense (ex. Gravity's Rainbow). Just want to give them some variety in reading. Some books I was thinking of were: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest or As I Lay Dying. Thanks
