Looking for truly compelling mystery, thriller, or spy novel recommendations. More often than not when I am reading, I can guess the twists / outcomes of these types of books so I am looking for ones that have kept you guessing and hooked, and was enjoyable through the final page.
Looking for something more modern so while Agatha Christie is great, I am interested in something more current so I can find new writers that I enjoy.
Bonus points if the protagonist / their family doesn't become entwined in the larger story – the trope of the detective's family being caught in the crosshairs of a killer he/she is chasing or the spy falling in love with their informant is a bit tired. I will take recommendations with these plot points if you loved the book, but if they avoid cliches all the better.
Authors I've really enjoyed: Dennis Lehane, Jane Harper, Gillian Flynn.
Thanks in advance!
