I’ve been thinking about how publishers release hardbacks months, sometimes even a year, before paperbacks. I know this has been the norm for years, but I really don’t agree with it.
Hardbacks feel more like collectibles, while paperbacks are affordable, easier to handle, and more accessible. I get that publishers have to make money, but why should it be acceptable to prioritize profits over readers for such a long period? I feel like it's such a barrier.
If a book generates a lot of hype pre-release, wouldn't releasing the paperback sooner, or even at the same time as the hardback, make sense? It seems like the long wait forces people who can afford it to buy the hardback, while others might turn to libraries, piracy, or lose interest by the time the paperback is available.
Personally, I prefer paperbacks because they’re cheaper and more convenient. Waiting for a new release paperback can be a little frustrating, especially if everyone starts sharing spoilers online.
Do you think the paperback vs hardback release strategy needs to change? Do you think releasing them at the same time, or at least closer together, would increase sales and make books more accessible? What would be your ideal release strategy?
