I am currently reading a book that has illustrations and decided to share my opinion about them.
On the one hand, I like them. That is, when you come across a cool illustration in a book that depicts either a character or some kind of creature, you just want to look at it, because they can look so cool that you want to draw them yourself. Also, if the author has described clothes on a character that you have never seen, then thanks to the illustration you will better understand how he looks.
But on the other hand, such a book may cost more than an edition without illustrations. Also, some character may be depicted in a completely different way. For example, in "Neverwhere" the heroine was described with a dark orange hair color, but in the illustrations she is completely brunette and looks like a boy (although this is better than what was in the comic). Or in Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan, there was such a creature as an Air Jellyfish, which looked much safer in my head than it was depicted in the illustration. It may also be that the artist's style may not be liked.
