For me, it’s animal death. I find animal death incredibly triggering to read about, especially when it’s described in graphic detail. I can deal with it when the characters are hunting for food, or if the animal dies in a circumstance like bad weather or such. But when the author goes out of their way in describing an animal being killed, ugh. I’m done.
I had an instant while reading “The Winter of the Witch” by Katherine Arden. Very early on in the book, there was a very shocking animal death that was described horrifically and I was literally sobbing and shaking when it happened. I immediately quit reading the book, and returned it to my local library.
What about you guys? What things would make you immediately drop the book and never go back to it?
