I think something I've been thinking about is "manicholy" – art of such an abjectly miserable, dark topic, maybe with the slightest twinge of silver lining, but told with an air of mania that these wildly contrasting forces balance out to an inappropriate feeling of melancholy. The inherent heady feeling of nostalgic grief of such an emotion, but with larger passionate outbursts enabled by said clashing forces. Some examples of this in other media are albums Can't Maintain by AJJ and Tallahassee by the Mountain Goats, or the shows Moral Orel or NGE, or the game Disco Elysium.

I am not just looking for dark books/silver lining, but this more specific feeling – these references for the emotion are all acclaimed and noted for their darkness but I don't just want "good, dark books"

By NGE you mean Neon Genesis Evangelion?

It’s possible your criteria could be met by *The waking engine* by David Edison, or *The Windup girl* by Paolo Bacigalupi.
