I really love classics but I wanna try something more modern. One of the reasons why I've stirred away from newer stuff is because of how a lot of books, especially those in the YA genre, have very simplistic writing. Not that I'm hating on that style or anything, but I just can't seem to get into books like that. A beautiful writing style and prose is a must for me.
To be specific, I'm looking for something that's clean (kissing and stuff is fine), well-written, has poetic/flowery language, and has in depth characters. I would also prefer for the mc to be female.
Here are some classics that I like:
-
"Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte (my absolute favorite!)
-
"Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte
-
"A Room With a View" by E.M. Forster
-
"Persuasion" by Jane Austen
-
"Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier
-
"The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde
Also, it doesn’t have to be something published super recently. It can be written in maybe the last 100 years or so.

We like a lot of the same classics. Here are a few modern reqs
Vendela Vida is very poetic. I especially loved “Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name”
Rebecca Ross is YA, but her River Enchanted duology is quite lovely.
Anything by Elizabeth Kostova, Naomi Novak (specifically Spinning Silver and Uprooted), or YangSze Choo are also top tier imo.
You may like The Thirteenth Tale
