Bloody January by Alan Parks is great. Its based in Scotland during the 70’s. Pretty atmospheric and gritty read. Morally grey detective, one of my new favourites.
Birdman by Mo Hayder. Start of the Jack Caffery series. I’ve read the first two and they can be pretty heavy, Mo doesn’t pull any punches.

Jo Nesbo! I’m on a tear with his books right now. I’ve read three in the past few weeks. They are smart and informative and clever and I never figure out who done it until the very end.
The first is called The Bat. The first I read was the 3rd in the series – The Redbreast. I started there based on advice I got on the internet. But now that I’ve read the first 3 I think it would have been fine to start with The Bat.
Anyway, they’re great! Check them out. I’m excited to get to the 7th book, as it’s been adapted into a film.

Have you read the Logan Macrae books by Stuart McBride? They start with Cold Granite and are based in Aberdeen. The idea behind them was to write crime books from the pov of the sidekick. They’re well written, really funny and the crime is compelling.

Kurt Wallander is right up your alley! Fantastic series by Henning Mankell

Department Q series by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Scandinavian noir. Dark and atmospheric. The second series I discovered after reading and really enjoying Jo Nesbo.
