Ok hear me out because this idea is a little half baked.
We keep our old/rare/expensive books in a home library with a lockable door as we have two very young children who would tear them apart.
But one day they'll be old enough to be allowed in, and I can imagine just how fun that will be for them to see all the "secret" books in mum and dad's "special" room.
So I want to have a bit of fun with it by putting some books on the bottom shelf that aren't kids books but would still be interesting to a child/adolescent.
So far I've got, a beautifully illustrated atlas, a butterfly identification guide (in German), a German-english dictionary, a book on ornithology, a guide to identifying constellations, a field guide to wild herbs native to our area, and a book on rocks/minerals.
From that list you can probably get a feel for what I'm going for. I'd love some other suggestions to add to my list!
