I have a fantasy romance series I'm working on where, due to plot reasons, the male lead is occasionally put in a position where he's able to "save the day" but mostly he has to rely on his partner. I use it to explore themes of toxic masculinity (he's a very open minded character, yet those insecurities and gender roles pounded into us all are something he has to overcome) as well as dealing with judgement from outsiders.
Unfortunately a lot of times I see a movie/show tackle the damsel trope it's either by removing the male entirely and having the female protagonist fight on her own (which I'm cool with) or by intentionally emasculating the man and making him seem useless (which I'm not ok with. If the only way you can make a woman look strong is by making the men around her week, you need to reevaluate if you actually believe women can be strong.)
So I want some suggestions on books where the female love interest takes the lead and perhaps tackles some themes of masculinity and insecurity but in the end has a man that is fine with being protected by a strong woman. (Doesn't have to be romantic tho, could be friendships. Romance just adds an extra layer to that in-built need to be the protector.)
Oh and try to avoid anything that is just blatant role reversal that feels like all the author did was use the find and replace tool. The woman can still have feminine character traits and the man can still have masculine traits.
Sorry if this request is too specific. I'm just trying to find inspiration and reference for my own writing. I've got some sensitivity readers that are helping and ironically they're the ones that helped me realize I was robbing her of her femininity in my pursuits.
