i am looking for the books which begin other books. i’m talking about the first books in ethnography, philosophy, psychology. books to give me insight of life and culture. i have read argonauts of the western pacific by malinowski. i have freud’s psychoanalytic theory, and his interpretation of dreams. i’m looking for more. i have a preference for dark themes as well if you have that.

    1. “Origin of Species” by Charles Darwin is public domain. I’ve heard citing Dawrin referred to as ‘wrapping yourself in the cloak of Darwin’, if you can prove Darwin originally made a point you’re golden. It’s also interesting to see what he was wrong about.

Another good one is the paper “”The Spandrels of San Marco and the Panglossian Paradigm: A Critique of the Adaptationist Programme” by Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Lewontin. It’s a paper that outlined a concept in evolution where something isn’t the product of natural selection, but the product of just sort of being associated with something that’s selected for.

EDIT- also it’s a play, but “Bent” by Martin Sherman was sort of the first public acknowledgement of the injustices Pink Triangle prisoners suffered, and is arguably the starting point for people studying the experiences of queer people in Nazi Germany.
