I run a book discussion as part of my job. We usually have themes for the year, and this year, we are reading books that relate to World War 2. Our December meeting is part book discussion and part holiday lunch/gift exchange, so I usually try to have the book be holiday-related to keep the mood. But it doesn’t have to be! I would like it to be a little “lighter” or “cozier” than some of our other reads at least which I know is a bit of an ask for a book set during World War 2!

We are in the US, the group is mainly women in their 70s and 80s, who generally like books less than 500 pages (300 pages or so is a sweet spot, but not necessary). Books they’ve loved this year include The Hiding Place by Carrie Ten Boom and The Forest of Vanishing Stars, by Kristen Harmel. A book they didn’t enjoy as much was Clark and Division, by Naomi Hirahara (though it had good discussion). Only request is “no Nazi love interests” and nothing set in a concentration camp…

    Any suggestions deeply appreciated!

    1. The only book that comes to mind is Molly’s Surprise by Valerie Tripp. It’s part of the American Girl line so it’s aimed at an younger audience but it would be a lot cozier and lighter. It’s set around Christmas time of 1943 and the main character’s father is away serving in England as part of the U.S. Army Medical Corp.
