Looking for a book that deals with someone growing up in the Southern United States, who took a knack for mathematics and used it to his advantage later in life to solve weird mysteries or to gain monetary value. Set in the South because, well for one I can relate to it a little bit more, but also I read the Elementals by Michael Dowell and I really enjoyed the pacing and the overall book. Doesn't have to necessarily be horror.

Not the south, Chicago in fact, but the play Proof may interest you.
A Gift Of Time, by Merritt
Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
It’s a non-fiction set in 1960’s Virginia. It’s about three African American women mathematicians—Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson—who worked at NASA and made significant contributions to the U.S. space program, including John Glenn’s orbital flight. It starts off with their childhood so you get a full picture.
