Feeling pretty pessimistic about real life politics lately, and I’d like to seek refuge in speculative fiction that deals with people resisting authoritarian regimes

I just finished Book of Joan by Lidia Yuknavitch, and I thought it was going to scratch this itch at first but ultimately felt like it didn’t live up to its potential.

I typically like books that fit some combo of these criteria:
    – set in outer space
    – written by a woman or non-binary author
    – around or less than 500 pages (but def open to longer)
    – preferably not YA (but I’m open to it depending on the book/series!)

    Some books I’ve loved lately:
    – the Teixcalaan duology by Arkady Martine
    – the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir
    – Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
    – the Expanse series by James SA Corey (Cibola Burn and Persepolis Rising were my faves)
    – the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers
    – This is How You Lose the Time War
    – Sphere

Some books I’ve tried and didn’t love (or didn’t finish:
    – Red Rising
    – Hyperion
    – Book of Joan
    – Children of Time (I was lukewarm on this one)

    Any suggestions?
