“I would ask myself what o'clock it could be; I could hear the whistling of trains, which, now nearer and now farther off, punctuating the distance like the note of a bird in a forest, shewed me in perspective the deserted countryside through which a traveler would be hurrying towards the nearest station: the path that he followed being fixed for ever in his memory by the general excitement due to being in a strange place, to doing unusual things, to the last words of conversation, to farewells exchanged beneath an unfamiliar lamp which echoed still in his ears amid the silence of the night; and to the delightful prospect of being once again at home.”
My interpretation: the narrator wakes up and he's wondering what the time is, he hears the whistling of the train, which he compares to a bird singing in the forest, and he can estimate the distance it takes the travelers to get to that train because he can hear it, and I'm not very sure of the rest, I could use some help please.
Btw, this is not homework help. I'm reading for fun and I like to know what the author meant behind his sentences and why he chose to write in this way, or what imagery is he trying for me to have. I am reading before bed lol so I'm a little sleepy.

Is this the wrong place to post? I read the rules and it said nothing against this?
