Haven’t actively read any books for fun since high school. (Not for assignments, I used to spend most my lunch time in the library with a rented book). So I don’t really know what my taste is these days.
Would like to get in that habit again.
I don’t mind a good mystery, I’m also fond of horror. I’ve read and listened to a few Stephen King books that I enjoyed, but I’d like to explore more than just king.
Idk if my taste in movies/tv shows is a good indicator of what I would like. But I’ve enjoyed shows like The Bear, Breaking Bad, Euphoria. I like the gritty dark dramas and flawed tragic characters.
Movies, I really like The Thing, the departed, goodfellas, stand by me, Oppenheimer (anything nolan puts out really lol), sicario, blade runner

You have similar tastes as me. Based on the feel of the shows you mentioned and the writing style of the author, I highly recommend you try Already Dead by Charlie Huston. If you like it, it’s the first in a five book series. And I’ll have tons more recommendations for you…dark and gritty is my favorite.
I could recommend so many but I feel like A Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay is a perfect fit. Suspense, horror, page turner. It was turned into a movie, Knock at the Cabin by director M. Night Shyamalan, but the ending is different.
