I read this book many years ago. I loved it. (I didn't like "To Say Nothing of the Dog" though. It lacked the same charm and excitement, I thought.) I loved her book "Unchartered Territory" as well. Can anyone recommend any books that are similar in style to "Doomsday Book", or deal with similar themes? I realise that, yes, this is a pretty specific ask. Not the typical generic "What's your favourite book ever?" kind of post you often see on this subreddit. 🙂

Have you read Timeline by Michael Crichton? I haven’t read it in close conjunction with Doomsday Book, but when I was reading Doomsday Book it felt similar to Timeline to me. Time traveling historians also feature in Jodi Taylor’s The Chronicles of St. Mary’s series, though they are still in my tbr list so take this rec with that in mind.

    2. I also loved Doomsday Book and disliked To Say Nothing of the Dog. *Blackout* and *All Clear* are two sequels, also written by Connie Willis. As far as I can tell, *Blackout* is a direct sequel to Doomsday. The events of Doomsday are mentioned at the beginning of Blackout. The vibe of both books is very similar.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North has a similar blend of time travel, comedy, mystery, dark themes, and death.

Following because I _loved_ that book too.

I’ve read The Time Travellers Guide to Medieval England by Ian Mortimer which I enjoyed but doesn’t have a fictional story to get immersed in.

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet was great and the second book in the series World Without End is set during the plague. No time travel element though.

I’ve read and didn’t like Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, it has time travel but is set in 18th century Scotland.
