Hi all,
I’ve been getting very into this subject recently thanks to the rise in CGI-based pre-human documentaries. (Prehistoric Planet, Life on Our Planet, etc). Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find many good suggestions. Most threads and recs I’ve dug up (here and via Google) on the subject end up being about historical fiction. I’m not looking for Clan of the Cave Bear.
What I am looking for is books detailing either the geological aspects of pre-human earth and/or life on earth before Homo sapiens, and ideally less focused on dinosaurs (lots of books about them already).
I’ve read Sapiens, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs, and The Rise and Reign of Mammals. Ideally the books would be about the pre-Pleistocene period (i.e. nothing more recent than ~2 million years ago). I’m not sure if there just isn’t much material on the subject (seems unlikely) or if I’m just bad at searching (much more plausible).

A good term to use would be “natural history”
Prehistory about Pre-Humans:
– Blueprints: Solving the Mystery of Evolution (Edey and Johanson)
– Lucy and Lucy’s Child (both by Johanson)
Also, it’s more recent than 2MYA but:
– After the Ice: A Global Human History, 20,000-5000 BC (Mithen) (especially if you want something nonfiction in the vein of Clan of the Cave Bear)
