I love challenging books, sophisticated sentences, complex themes, opaque subtext… usually. Right now my brain doesn’t have the extra bandwidth to parse Pynchon’s prose. So I need something more straightforward.
I’m looking for intelligent, perhaps beautiful, compelling books that just absolutely rip from page 1, and that remain stylistically less demanding. I want books that rise about the level of an airplane read, but don’t require deep contemplation. I want, say, a western, but more than Louis L’Amour and less than Cormac McCarthy. The Larry McMurtry zone, perhaps.
Got anything?
