I'm not a fan of typical romance fiction AT ALL, but I'm a romantic at heart and I've realised that some of my favourite books feature a weird or unconventional love story.
I'm not talking about opposites attract kind of thing, or difficulties caused by real world issues – the books I like are set in the real world but lean towards magical realism or a fairytale vibe, with a love story set against some kind of strange circumstances. What I like about them is that they really explore how a relationship functions in unusual and challenging circumstances and how a couple's love is strong enough to overcome whatever odd situation they're in.
Think things like The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, Shark Heart by Emily Habeck, The Girl With Glass Feet by Ali Shaw, The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus…
Does anyone have any other suggestions for books with this sort of feel? I'm looking for books that feature adult characters rather than teens. Characters of any gender are fine.
(And because I bet someone will suggest Our Wives Under the Sea – I've already read it and unfortunately found it pretty disappointing, so not that!)
