Gillian Flynn’s 3 novels got me out of a reading slump a few years ago. Since then, I’ve been on a mission to find books that are similar to her distinct writing style.

I’ve tried Tana French, Karin Slaughter, Alice Feeney, Frieda McFadden, Heather Gudenkauf, Paula Hawkins (did love Girl on the Train), but none seem to match Flynn’s brilliance. Some had great atmosphere, but the writing felt uninspiring and bland in most of what I read. I love how Flynn is able to write dark, disturbing stories with such a witty, sharp style of writing. I also adore her unlikeable characters (huge fan of Ottessa Moshfegh as well who has also perfected this archetype IMO).

Curious if anybody has any lesser-known recs that may scratch this itch? I’d much prefer thoughtful writing over crazy twists. Thank you!!!
