Fourth Wing and ACOTAR. I know that both are popular book series but I can’t stand the MCs. It felt like I was reading a mediocre fanfiction with the most annoying Mary-Sue like MCs imaginable.

if i can’t get into a book in the , say, first ten pages, i don’t read it, too many other books on my wanna read list…..a few that i closed were
#1: all the pretty horses… i got 2 pages into one big run-on sentence… if it was not a library book , i would have corrected it and then burned it……
# 2 was a book where the main characters were going on a road trip, stop for breakfast and the author describes every single item on the menu…. i know what they serve at the greasy spoon…get on with the story…..
#3 was anna karenina…. again filled with description of grass and woods and long russian winters…i skipped most of it to get to the point and the only reason i read it was because another book i had read ( don’t remember if it was clive baker??) kept referring to anna karenina…..1980s/90s
i guess i am old and cranky…don’t waste my time with nonsense just to fill the pages…..

A Man Called Ove by F. Backman. A poorly written, absurd account of an ill-mannered, appalling, misanthropic malcontent. So abominable it ought to be banned: a) to save people their hard-earned cash; b) because it is a misrepresentation of literature; and c) trees had to die for it to be published. Hands down the worst novel I’ve had the unfortunate displeasure of having read. Wouldn’t even make a good door stopper.

John Dies at the End.
It gets recommended so often – humor? Horror? Cosmic horror? Always a recommendation. It seemed like it would be right up my alley, but it was just so corny. It felt like I was reading a ~300 page early-reddit meme.
Lonesome Dove. I wanted to like it. I went in expecting to like it. But I found myself totally indifferent to the characters. Someone dies and it’s, “oh well” on to the next one. The story plods and drags. It’s the same problem I had with Pillars of the Earth. Lots of description, not enough story.
Maybe I’m jaded from reading too much Steinbeck. He kills someone off and it’s like you’ve lost a family member.
