I'm not a fan of typical romance fiction AT ALL, but I'm a romantic at heart and I've realised that some of my favourite books feature a weird or unconventional love story.
I'm not talking about romance between unlikely couples/opposites attract kind of thing – the books I like are set in the real world but lean strongly towards magical realism or a fairytale-like vibe, with a love story set against some kind of strange circumstances.
Things like The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, Shark Heart by Emily Habeck, The Girl With Glass Feet by Ali Shaw, The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus…
Does anyone have any other suggestions for books with this sort of feel?
(And because I bet someone will suggest Our Wives Under the Sea – I've already read it and unfortunately found it pretty disappointing, so not that!)
