Which translation would you say is the best for reading crime and punishment? I’m reading the translation by Constance Garnett. I’m about 115 pages into it and it’s taking alot longer than expected. I heard that translation plays a huge part in it so I wanted to know if I should stick it out with this translation or if I should try a different one. And if someone could recommend a translation for the Brothers Karamazov I would really appreciate it.

I read the translation by David McDuff (Penguin Classics) and it is, I think, the most read translation and good to understand. My mother’s tongue is neither English nor Russian.
You can always try out the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. This translation is newer and supposedly better translated. I don’t know if the latter is true but I’ve heard many good things about it.
Most people are divided and have a favourite translation. I suggest searching which translations there are and reading excerpts from each one and picking the one that you like most. I did this for Crime and Punishment and do so for other books as well. Good luck!
