So, I had read this book long ago, I don't remember the author or title but I do know the story plot.
So, the book starts with a couple in court in which the husband wins and the mother and daughter were left alone, or may be thrown out by her now ex husband. With the little money, they rent an apartment for cheap since they're broke. They soon find some odd jobs to do, her daughter in her 20s and mother in 40s. Soon they get back on their feet with the jobs they do. One day an earthquake occurs and they come out just like everyone else. Later when they went inside all those wall patches started to come off, cracks on the wall and at last they found a small part of the wall fallen or broke. In that they find few papers or documents perhaps (I don't know exactly) which are dated at least 30-50 years back which are titled confidential. They also have a neighbor in the same apartment, unmarried man in 40s living with his I'll father. He works as police man. This is sort of a starting part of the book. I also remember that the government mostly intelligence agency also finds for someone or something which mostly related to those papers which have been found by these mom and daughter in their wall. As the story progresses, they both try to find about the documents and the neighbor guy helps them. The daughter wants to take help of her boyfriend but turns out he is an asshole. Slowly the mom and the man get to know each other well, go out on dates, or for a restaurant or coffee basically outdoor and at one time the neighbor, who is unmarried man and the mom starts to make out and suddenly the daughter enters and leaves in anger or some emotions. She is then kidnapped or taken by some people in the vehicle. Soon the guy and mom try to find her. As the story goes on, they meet lot of people and find lot of secrets along the way. The climax goes something like (I can't remember exactly but only few bits of it) the story ends with there will be a lot of fight between these two groups and at the end the story sort of ends like a mystery. And yes, at one point of time in the novel, the government or some group who are either intelligence agency or some other groups capture them and torture the one who are involved (it might be the mom or daughter or the man who is now her new boyfriend or partner,i don't know) The fate of them is unknown(or may be i don't remember how it ends) but definitely it's not a story like 'they lived happily ever after ' kind of story. The accuracy of the ending, which is life is not always happy and not every story has a good end sort of thing. Again, I don't remember the ending or how it ends. But it's either I don't recall it or the books ends with the fate of characters is unknown or left to the reader.
