I recently finished reading Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne. It was such an enthralling read, and it really made me want to learn more about American Indians. Does anyone know of any good books in this area? Thank you!

Absolutely read David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Complex saga and with a Scorsese movie coming out later in the month, it’ll give you a great background to understand it. It was a multi-layered book that has a lot of layers. Very interesting.

“Captured by Indians: 15 Firsthand Accounts, 1750-1870” by Frederick Drimmer is really interesting.

For something relatively recent, In the Spirit of Crazy Horse by Peter Matthiessen. It tells the story of the FBI’s war on the American Indian Movement by focusing on Leonard Peltier, an AIM member, who was convicted for the killing of two FBI agents after a controversial (to say the least) trial. He has been in prison now for almost 50 years.
It took almost a decade to release the book after it was originally published due to lawsuits from the FBI and Bill Janklow, who was the governor of South Dakota during the time period the book covers.

I found “Among the Shoeshine” by Elijah Wilson to be interesting. It is the true story of a boy living with the Shoeshine in Utah in the 1800s.
