What are your thoughts on book challenges? Why do you like them or dislike them?

I personally like them. They get me out of my comfort zone and give me something to look forward to.

If you like them, which ones have you done??

This year I finished my ABC and am currently half way through my clock challenge.

Have you been found any new favorites doing one? Checking off your TBR? Do you go in order or whatever piques your interest at the time?

I love a book challenge…like you said, it gets me out of my comfort zone (looking at you, book title starting with an X as part of the ABC challenge). I did not read them in order.

I was relieved to have finished it, however, because I found myself putting off reading books that really excited me because the titles didn’t fit my challenge.

I hadn’t heard of the clock challenge before… maybe that will be my next move.

Hnn. I am up for reading diff books but I generally don’t like feeling forced to read. I am also a slow reader.

So… I do reading challenges but I just end up challenging myself. Like Russian lit. Or sci Fi. I usually end up trying genres I normally wouldn’t.

That usually means I’m better off lurking in recommendmeabook.

One I can’t be a part of is speed reading or reading n amount in a week. Too much pressure. Too much focus on the numbers and not enough savoring of the reading experience. But that’s just me. I’m a slow reader.

I do the Goodreads challenge every year for #of books with mixed results. I always try to follow along with the Popsugar challenge (fun!) and Book Riot’s Read Harder challenge (eye-opening). Except for Goodreads I don’t worry too much about finishing the challenges. I use them to see if there are major gaps/biases in my reading choices so I can keep an eye out in the future. A few years back I never got around to reading a book by an AAPI author but since I’d realized that I ended up reading four that fit the bill the following year.

    5. I do not think about book challenges, except when prompted, upon which event I dismiss the thought. I neither like nor dislike them. They hold no interest for me.

I did my first book challenge last year and I was hooked. The one I did was called Genre of the Month Challenge, it was part of the Turn of a Page (I think that was the name) book club on Goodreads. It was so much fun and really got me out of my comfort zone, since I primarily use the library and you get 4 prompts each month so I had to just find books that were immediately available.

Since then I switched to Storygraph and one of my favorite features is their challenge forum. My favorite is Linzthebookworm/logophile challenge, there are a total of 60 prompts, but it is broken up into levels. I also have my own challenge of reading fiction and nonfiction books by authors from 195 countries. I’m using 2 challenges to keep track of my progress, they are nearly the same with prompts for each of the countries, but I’m using one to log my fiction reads and the other to log my nonfiction reads. I also participated in Book Hoarder Challenge to help me with my aging TBR.

    7. I read for fun and entertainment.

I don’t need to make it like work where there is a goal and deadline.
