I haven’t read the Vera books but I thought of the Marjory Fleming series by Aline Templeton when I read your title. [Cold In The Earth](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1781816.Cold_in_the_Earth) is the first book, I enjoyed the audio editions narrated by Kate McGoldrick. e.g. “After Port Said, the Suez Canal sucked us in. As the shadows grew long we drifted down it’s narrow length, exchanging impassive gazes with the goats, camels, and robed humans that inhabited its sandy banks. I sat on the upper deck with a couple of oranges we had picked up in Port Said, reading the….”

You might like Elly Griffiths’, The Crossing Places (first book in the Ruth Galloway series). A forensic archaeologist and a detective inspector team up and solve a murder. The setting is in England and I loved the characters and the mystery. I think her novels have an Anne Cleeves vibe that you might enjoy.

Possibly the [Mary Russell Mysteries](https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tLP1TewSLEoMTczYPQSzk0sqlQoKi0uTs3JUShOLcpMLQYApoYK4Q&q=mary+russell+series&rlz=1C1GCEB_enNZ924NZ924&oq=mary+russel&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqBwgDEC4YgAQyCggAEAAY4wIYgAQyBwgBEC4YgAQyBggCEEUYOTIHCAMQLhiABDIHCAQQABiABDINCAUQLhivARjHARiABDIHCAYQLhiABDIHCAcQABiABDIHCAgQABiABDIHCAkQABiABNIBCTExNDIyajBqN6gCALACAA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)? The premise is that she’s Sherlock Holmes’s Mrs which doesn’t sound promising BUT she’s a strong and intelligent female lead, the mysteries are convoluted and the settings are glorious! Especially Dartmoor in “The Moor” and “The Game” set in India.
