I was planning on reading some Ruth Rendell mysteries. But, I am not sure where to start. I saw a few episodes of the TV series and found them to be a little dark. Do the books also have the same feel? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

They are dark. That’s her thing. Basically, you have the Inspector Wexford series and the standalone books. The standalone books, some of which are written as Barbara Vine, are generally darker than the Wexford books. If you are going to read the series, then I guess start at the beginning. If the standalone books then it doesn’t really matter. I personally think The Keys to the Street is a good one.
