I am a female in my 40s. In my early teens I was obsessed with the Sweet Valley books – mostly because I felt like I really got to know the characters and could immerse myself in their world.
I would love to find some new series to sink my teeth into. I am open in terms of genre, though I do particularly enjoy romance, suspense and horror. The important part is that I can get to know the characters over a number of books.
Any suggestions please?

The In Death series by JD Robb. Although there is explicit sex. The MC experienced abuse as a child and it took her some time to work through it.
The Southern Vampire mysteries by Charlaine Harris might suit. 13 books, cover mystery/romance with a dash of horror. They’re very readable and the characters are interesting. They were adapted to the series True Blood but are very different.
Thursday Next is an experienced woman who is the main character in a long series that mixes many genres.

Perhaps the Millers Kill series by Julia Spencer Fleming. It’s a crime fiction series with a strong romance element that builds as the series progresses and has a good collection of secondary characters to get invested in. The first book is In the Bleak Midwinter.
