Hi all! I’m in a book club and we’re looking for our next book. We’ve read some thrillers recently, but we’re getting a little bored with the slow storylines. Our next theme is “books that will f*** you up”, punch you in the face, have you on the edge of your seat the entire way. What are some books that were crazy or a mind f*** that made you want to throw it across the room? I think we’re trying to stay away from anything historical!

Earthling by Sayaka Murata. Looks innocent enough but is absolutely wild and also brings up some good conversations about taboo.
Darn, you said historical, I was going to recommend my work until you said that.
Killing floor by Jack Reacher
Definitely “Amygdalatropolis” by B.R. Yeager. 100% messed w/ me a while after reading. It’s quite bleak.
The Road by Cormac Mc Carthy! However if you’re not in the headspace to read about a world that is in full despair this may not be the book for you. I found the prose to be excellent and the descriptions really made me feel like I was right there with the narrator. The ending can be interpreted how you want it to be, but I personally felt hope at the end.
