Some of my fave scifi, like Michael chrichton’s sphere and ted chiang’s the story of your life, as well as parts of Cixin Liu’s TBP series and Christopher paolini’s to sleep in a sea of stars are all essentially a nerd or team of nerds trying to figure out what is going on with a deeply inhuman life form/ way of being. Some of these just feel like a thinly veiled excuse for the author to infodump about a cool hypothetical they came up with and the scientific implications and honestly- I love it. I love the way this allows us to examine the ways we interact with the world so if anyone has other recs in this vein lmk

Oh, you would totally love Adrian Tchaikovsky. I think you’d like *The Doors of Eden* best.
I’d also recommend *The Sparrow* by Mary Doria Russel and lots of James Tiptree Jr.’s short stories.
